Downsizing Do's

When downsizing, experts say a good rule of thumb is to keep 1/3 to 1/2 of what you started with. Here’s how…

1. Make a list of all the items you love and can’t live without. This will help you to say goodbye to whatever didn’t make the list. By keeping what’s on your ‘love’ list, you won’t be upset about the things you part with.
2. Three months before the move, start clearing out unwanted items. Start with the worst offenders – jammed closets, boxes of papers … anything you’ve been ‘meaning to get to’! Set a daily or weekly goal and tackle it one section at a time.
3. Don’t end up with your dresser in the hallway! As early as possible, get or draw up floor plans of your new space and play with pre-arranging your furniture & accessories before the move. Look at the plans realistically; if you’re cramming in end tables, shelves & cabinets face the hard truth and edit some more.
4. Be ruthless when editing areas full of items that have less sentimental value. Take the garage … If you’re downsizing from a house to a condo do your ‘happy dance’ as you ditch snow shovels, the lawn mower & ladders!
5. As you Reduce, don’t forget to Recycle or let others Reuse. Be environmentally responsible and find a home for everything. Consider giving cleaning supplies to a shelter, neighbour or cleaning lady. Shelters are also a great place for unwanted quality clothing & household items. If there’s time (and you have the energy) organize a sale.
